Outer Banksstars Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline reportedly stepped in after cocreator Jonas Pate allegedly grabbed and shook a production assistant on set.
The incident took place while filming in Dubrovnik, Croatia, according to TMZ. Pate allegedly put his hands on the PA and shook her while shouting in her face, which caused Stokes, 33, to separate them. Cline, 27, also jumped in to help de-escalate the situation.
TMZ reported that production continued after the alleged incident. In addition to being a cocreator and director on Outer Banks, Pate is also the creator of Prime Video’s The Runarounds, which stars his daughter, Lilah Pate.
Sources told TMZ that “tensions were high” on set but claimed the outburst was not “unusual behavior” for Pate. Us Weekly has reached out to Netflix and Pate’s rep for comment.

Outer Banks, which debuted in 2020, follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in a coastal North Carolina town. The social divide is introduced through the Kooks — a.k.a the wealthy residents — and the working class Pogues. A search for lost treasure causes the groups to be even more at odds.
It was confirmed in November 2024 that Outer Banks would end after season 5, wrapping the arcs of John B (Stokes), Sarah (Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). While fans were initially excited for one final journey with the Pogues, things took a turn when the season 4 finale ended with JJ’s shocking death.
Despite criticism about the show’s decision to get rid of one of the main characters, Pate defended the writing choice.
“It’s been kind of lurking in his DNA from the beginning. He’s really a tragic figure, and the idea of mortality, and you only have a finite window — it’s also a theme of the show,” Pate told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2024. “It’s something John B has talked about from the first season. So believe it or not, this is something that was always sort of baked in the cake, and we just wanted to tell the story as elegantly and interestingly as possible.”

Pankow weighed in on the surprising narrative change as well, telling Netflix’s Tudum that same month, “When I first found out JJ was gonna risk it all and not make it, I understood it. And the risks got bigger and bigger, and the stakes got higher and higher. His death really does set up the future of OBX with the question, what is worth it? And when someone that close to you is gone, how do you navigate that?”
Along with finishing Outer Banks, Pate is also expected to be working on a second season ofThe Runarounds. Before the show premiered in September, Pate teased that there were already plans for more installments. He also revealed that he was writing a prequel to Outer Banks, titled Kildare. The series is still in the early stages but would feature a whole new set of young actors and focus on the founding of each group in the show’s fictional Figure 8 town.
Outer Banks is currently streaming on Netflix and The Runarounds is out on Prime Video.
